This Policy Brief deals with the current challenges and problems of the Belarusian financial industry. It suffers from a number of adverse shocks. Despite this, available banking statistics do not give grounds for any considerable concerns. Such kind of dissonance is due to methodological ‘novelties’ in the computation of a range of indicators, both in banking and non-financial metrics. This restricts the possibilities of proper understanding and comprehension of the current developments in the financial industry. This becomes an additional factor of squeezing trust in the banking system and amplifies uncertainty at the macro level.
